Honda & Acura Oil Change in Anderson, SC

An oil change on a modern Honda or Acura is the single most important thing you can do to make 250,000 miles. Nalley's Automotive in Anderson, SC uses genuine Honda 0W-20 full synthetic, OEM Honda oil filters, a new crush washer every time, and resets your Maintenance Minder properly through HDS — not the dash button shortcut that wipes oil-life math.

The Basics

What Is a Honda Oil Change, Done Right?

Every 2008-and-newer Honda and Acura was engineered around a very specific oil: Honda Genuine 0W-20 full synthetic (or 5W-30 for older J-series and Type R K20C1). The clearances in the bearings, the VTC actuator, the VCM lifters, and the variable-displacement oil pump are all designed around that viscosity. Run 5W-30 in a 1.5T Civic and you'll get oil-pressure codes; run 0W-20 in a 3.5L V6 truck under tow load and you'll wear cam lobes.

A real oil change is more than a drain and fill. We use the OEM Honda filter (15400-PLM-A02, RTA-A01, or PR3 depending on model), replace the aluminum crush washer on the drain plug, torque the plug to 29 ft-lb (not gorilla-tight), top-fill the correct capacity to the centerline on the dipstick, then reset the Maintenance Minder through HDS so the oil-life algorithm starts over cleanly.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs Oil Change

Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.

Maintenance Minder shows A1, A12, A123, B1, etc.

The letter A means oil change due. B adds inspection. Numbers stack additional services (1 = tire rotation, 3 = transmission fluid, etc.). We translate the full code.

Oil-life percentage at 15% or lower

Honda's algorithm factors in driving conditions, not just miles. Once you're under 15%, the countdown is real — get in within the next 1,000 miles.

Engine ticking on cold start

Old or wrong-viscosity oil takes too long to reach the top end. On K-series, this also strains the VTC actuator — a $600 repair if it fails.

Oil smells like gasoline (1.5T models)

Fuel dilution is real on the L15B7 turbo engines (2017+ CR-V, Civic 1.5T, Accord 1.5T). If your dipstick smells like a gas can, you need an oil change yesterday — and an inspection.

Oil level high on the dipstick

Also fuel dilution. If your level is above the upper mark and you didn't overfill, fuel is leaking past the rings. Common on short-trip 1.5T drivers.

Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick

Healthy 0W-20 stays honey-amber for thousands of miles. If yours looks like coffee at 3,000 miles, something else is going on — usually an overdue interval or wrong viscosity.

VTEC engagement feels rough or noisy

VTEC relies on clean oil pressure to engage the secondary cam lobes. Sludged or thin oil makes engagement clunky or noisy above 4,500 RPM.

You bought a used Honda with unknown history

First thing we do: oil and filter change with OEM parts plus a magnetic drain-plug inspection for metal flakes. Cheap insurance on a used purchase.

"Check Engine Oil Level" message

Honda's electronic oil-level sensor caught a drop. Don't just top it off — find out why it dropped. We pressure-test for leaks and check for VCM oil consumption.

It's been over a year, regardless of miles

Even full synthetic degrades over time from heat cycling and moisture. Honda calls for once-yearly minimum, even on low-mileage cars.

How We Work

Our Oil Change Process at Nalley's

No surprises, no upsells. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your Honda or Acura to us.

1

Verify the correct oil spec

We confirm year, model, engine, and trim before we even crack the cap. A 2019 Civic 1.5T takes 0W-20 — a 2019 Civic Type R takes 5W-30. Same year, totally different oil.

2

Drain plug + new crush washer

Honda drain plugs use a one-time-use aluminum crush washer. Reusing it is the #1 cause of slow oil pan leaks. We replace it. Every time.

3

OEM Honda filter

Genuine Honda oil filters (15400-PLM-A02, 15400-RTA-003, etc.) have a proper bypass valve and anti-drainback diaphragm. The $4 Fram on the shelf doesn't. Worth the $4 difference on a $40,000 vehicle.

4

Fill with Honda 0W-20 full synthetic

Genuine Honda oil meets Honda's HTO-06 spec — a higher bar than the API SP rating on the shelf. Same oil the dealer pours, no markup.

5

HDS Maintenance Minder reset

We reset through HDS, which logs the service and zeros the oil-life algorithm cleanly. The dash-button shortcut works, but doesn't log it for service history.

6

Top-off other fluids + tire pressures

Washer fluid, coolant level check, brake fluid moisture test, tire pressures to door-jamb spec. Included with every oil change — no upcharge.

7

Photo inspection underneath

While the car's on the lift, we photograph leaks, CV boots, brake pad thickness, and exhaust mounts. You get the photos by text or email.

8

24/24 warranty

24 months / 24,000 miles on parts and labor. If our oil change causes a leak or issue, we own it.

Model-Specific Expertise

Common Oil Change Issues by Model

Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.

Civic

2016+ Civic 1.5T (L15B7) is prone to fuel dilution in cold/short-trip driving. We check the dipstick smell and recommend shorter intervals (4,000 miles, not the MM's 8,000) for short-trip drivers.

Accord

Accord 1.5T shares the L15B7 dilution issue. Accord 2.0T (K20C4) uses 0W-20 and is much more forgiving. V6 Accords (J35) take 5W-20 and the Maintenance Minder runs longer intervals.

CR-V

2017+ CR-V 1.5T is the worst offender for fuel-in-oil — Honda extended warranty coverage for cold-climate states. We see it here in SC too on short-commute drivers. Stick to 5,000-mile intervals.

Pilot

J35 V6 uses 0W-20 (2016+) or 5W-20 (older). VCM cylinder deactivation strains the rings — we recommend OEM oil only and an interval no longer than the MM calls for, ever.

Odyssey

Same J35 family, same VCM concerns. Heavy minivan duty (family hauling, mountain trips) means change intervals come up faster than highway commuter miles.

Acura MDX

J35 V6 in the MDX takes 0W-20 (2016+). SH-AWD models share the same engine spec but the rear differential fluid is a separate service we always check during oil changes.

Acura TLX

TLX 2.0T (2021+) uses 0W-20 and is very particular about oil quality. TLX 3.5L (2015-2020) uses 0W-20 as well. Type S takes the same — no need to upgrade viscosity.

Acura RDX

2019+ RDX (K20C1 2.0T) — same engine family as Civic Type R, runs 0W-20 stock. Heat-cycled hard from the turbo, so we don't stretch intervals past the MM.

Honest Pricing

What Does Oil Change Cost?

A real Honda oil change with OEM oil, an OEM filter, a new crush washer, an HDS reset, and an underbody inspection runs us roughly twice what a quick-lube charges for "synthetic blend" — because their $25 special uses generic 5W-30 or a no-name filter that doesn't meet Honda's spec. On a Honda, the wrong oil isn't cheap insurance — it's expensive sabotage.

We also won't sell you a "high-mileage" oil change you don't need, a "fuel system flush" upsell, or an "engine treatment" additive. The Honda spec doesn't call for those. Our pricing is what the service actually costs — no theater.

Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.

How often should I change the oil in my Honda or Acura?

Follow the Maintenance Minder — it factors in your actual driving. Most Hondas land at 6,000-8,000 mile intervals. Exception: 1.5T engines (Civic, Accord, CR-V) in short-trip use should change every 4,000-5,000 miles to manage fuel dilution. Always change at least once per year, even if mileage is low.

Why can't I just go to a $25 quick-lube?

Two reasons. First, almost every quick-lube uses generic 5W-30 or a "synthetic blend" — not Honda's 0W-20 full synthetic spec. Wrong viscosity wears your VTC actuator and triggers oil-pressure codes. Second, they don't reset the Maintenance Minder through HDS, so your oil-life algorithm gets out of sync. We've repaired plenty of $25 oil change consequences.

Will an independent shop oil change void my Honda warranty?

No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to use any qualified shop. We use OEM Honda oil and filters and keep itemized records — Honda warranty stays fully intact.

What's the difference between synthetic and synthetic blend?

Full synthetic is engineered base stock plus a tailored additive package. Blend is mostly conventional oil with some synthetic mixed in — cheaper to make, cheaper to sell, and not what Honda specs for any modern engine. We only use full synthetic.

My oil smells like gas. Is that bad?

Yes — that's fuel dilution, and it's a known issue on the L15B7 1.5T engines (2017+ CR-V, Civic 1.5T, Accord 1.5T). It thins the oil, reduces protection, and over time damages the rings. Honda issued an extended warranty in cold-climate states. Bring it in — we'll change the oil and check Honda's service bulletin update history.

Do I really need an OEM Honda filter, or is a $4 Fram fine?

OEM Honda filters have a calibrated bypass valve, proper anti-drainback membrane, and high-quality filter media sized for Honda's oil pump pressure. A generic filter without the anti-drainback diaphragm causes a 2-3 second dry start every morning. On a $40,000 vehicle, the $5 filter difference is silly to skip.

What does the Maintenance Minder code (A1, B12, etc.) actually mean?

The letter is the main service: A = oil change, B = oil change + inspection. The numbers stack additional services: 1 = tire rotation, 2 = air filter + cabin filter, 3 = transmission fluid, 4 = spark plugs + valve adjustment, 5 = coolant, 6 = rear differential fluid. So A12 = oil change + rotation + filters.

How long does an oil change take?

Walk-in: usually 30-45 minutes. With an appointment: in and out in 30 minutes flat. We schedule honestly — your appointment doesn't sit in the lot for 2 hours.

Can I bring my own oil and filter?

Yes, if they meet Honda spec. We'll inspect what you bring and let you know if it's appropriate. We charge labor only in that case, and warranty covers our labor — not parts you supplied.

Why is the dealer's oil change $90+?

Dealer overhead, service-writer commission, and a "shop supplies" upcharge. We use the same Honda oil and OEM filter, do the same HDS reset, and skip the upsell script. That's where the price gap comes from.

Time for an Oil Change?

Honda 0W-20 full synthetic, OEM filter, HDS Maintenance Minder reset, free underbody inspection. Done right, in and out in 30 minutes.
