Honda & Acura CV Axle Replacement in Anderson, SC
Clicking on turns means outer CV joint. Vibration under acceleration means inner CV joint. Nalley's Automotive in Anderson, SC diagnoses which one (or both) and installs genuine Honda or top-quality OEM axles only — never the parts-store reman axles that come back in 6 months with the same complaint.
What Is Honda CV Axle Replacement?
Every front-wheel-drive Honda and AWD Acura uses constant-velocity (CV) axles to transmit power from the transmission to the wheels while allowing for suspension travel and steering. Each axle has two joints — an outer CV joint near the wheel (which handles big steering angles) and an inner CV joint near the transmission (which handles suspension plunge). Failed joints produce very specific symptoms: outer joints click on turns, inner joints vibrate under acceleration.
On Honda, once a CV boot tears and the grease is out, the joint is contaminated — boot replacement alone is rarely worth it. We replace the entire axle. The catch: most parts-store "reman" Honda axles are notorious for vibration and early failure. We use genuine Honda axles or premium OEM-spec axles (GSP, NTN, EMPI Heavy Duty) with documented Honda fitment. Cheap remans go right back on the customer\'s next visit.
Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs CV Axle Replacement
Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.
Clicking sound when turning sharply
Classic outer CV joint failure. Most noticeable parking lot maneuvers and tight U-turns. Once it clicks, the joint is going — replace before it lets go.
Vibration that gets worse under acceleration
Inner CV joint failure or a damaged/bent axle. Usually felt through the steering wheel or floor in the 40–60 mph range under throttle.
Grease sprayed inside the wheel well
Torn CV boot has been slinging grease out. The joint is now contaminated — replace the full axle, not just the boot.
Clunking when going from drive to reverse
Worn inner CV joint splines or excessive plunge. Sometimes paired with a bad transmission mount — we check both.
Humming that changes with speed
Could be CV axle bearing or wheel bearing — overlapping symptoms. We isolate by listening for change with steering input.
Visible torn CV boot at inspection
Once a boot tears, contamination starts immediately. A 3-month-old tear may not click yet but the joint is on borrowed time.
Vehicle shudders under hard acceleration
Inner joint with excessive plunge. Common on Hondas past 150k miles, especially after potholes.
Squeaking at low speed only
Dry CV joint — boot may still be intact but the grease has broken down. Boot inspection time.
Wheel doesn't want to turn straight
A seized CV joint can resist steering — not just clicking but actually fighting back. Stop driving and tow in.
Recent reman axle that's already failed
We see this constantly. Parts-store reman axles often fail within 6–12 months. We replace with a quality OEM-spec unit.
Our CV Axle Replacement Process at Nalley's
No surprises, no upsells. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your Honda or Acura to us.
Visual + audible road test
Tight-radius parking lot turns to provoke outer joint click. Acceleration through 40–60 mph to provoke inner joint vibration. We confirm which joint(s) are failing.
On-lift inspection of boots and joints
Wheels off, axle rotated by hand, boots inspected for tears, joints checked for play. Photo report sent before any work.
Wheel bearing rule-out
CV and wheel bearing symptoms overlap. We check bearing play separately so you don't replace the wrong part.
Quote OEM Honda or premium OEM-spec
Genuine Honda axles for newer cars and SH-AWD. GSP, NTN, or EMPI Heavy Duty for older. Never parts-store reman.
Proper transmission fluid handling
Pulling an inner axle on a Honda automatic spills transmission fluid. We catch and replace what's lost with the correct Honda ATF — not generic Dexron.
Torque axle nut to factory spec
Most Hondas spec 181 ft-lb, J-series can spec 250+. Under-torque kills wheel bearings; over-torque damages hub. Calibrated torque wrench only.
Alignment check on both sides
Axle replacement disturbs the lower control arm. We check toe at minimum, full alignment recommended if both sides done.
Post-install road test + warranty
Same turns and acceleration test as diagnosis — verify no click, no vibration. 24-month / 24,000-mile written warranty on parts and labor.
Common CV Axle Replacement Issues by Model
Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.
Civic
Civic axles are durable, but parts-store remans for the 10th-gen have a known vibration problem. We use OEM Honda or premium spec — eliminates the call-back.
Accord
V6 Accord intermediate shaft + right axle assembly is unique — wrong axle fitment is common with cheap remans. We confirm part number by VIN.
CR-V
AWD CR-V has front and rear axles. Rear axles often fail at the inner joint past 120k. We diagnose all four positions, not just where the customer points.
Pilot
Pilot AWD axles take heavier loads than FWD models. SH-AWD on newer Pilots has unique part numbers — generic "Honda axle" won't fit.
Odyssey
Odyssey FWD axles last well, but the right axle's intermediate shaft bearing is a known weak point past 150k. We address bearing and axle together when needed.
Acura MDX
SH-AWD MDX has rear axles that are specific to the SH-AWD system. Aftermarket axles for SH-AWD often fit poorly — we OEM only on these.
Acura TLX
SH-AWD TLX same situation as MDX — OEM Honda axles only for the SH-AWD rear. Front FWD TLX axles tolerate quality OEM-spec.
Acura RDX
AWD RDX axles take heat from rear differential operation. Boots tear at the inner joint first — we check both ends carefully.
What Does CV Axle Replacement Cost?
CV axle pricing is one of the most-abused service categories in the industry — $99 axle specials with reman parts that fail in 6 months. We don\'t play that game. Our axle pricing reflects a genuine Honda or premium OEM-spec part installed properly with the correct ATF replacement and torque procedure.
On Hondas with documented reman fitment issues (newer Civics, AWD Acuras, J-series Pilots), we OEM only. The price difference vs. a parts-store reman is real, but the second replacement when the reman fails costs the entire job again.
Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

Why Choose Nalley's for CV Axle Replacement?
OEM Honda or premium OEM-spec
Genuine Honda for newer cars and SH-AWD; GSP, NTN, EMPI HD for older. Never parts-store reman — they fail.
Correct joint diagnosis
Outer joint = clicking on turns. Inner joint = vibration under throttle. We test both before recommending.
Honda ATF replacement
Inner axle pulls spill transmission fluid. We refill with the correct Honda ATF DW-1 — never generic Dexron.
Torqued to factory spec
Hondas spec axle nut torque from 181 to 250+ ft-lb. We use a calibrated torque wrench — improper torque kills wheel bearings.
Alignment check after
Axle work disturbs the lower control arm. We check alignment after every axle job to prevent tire wear.
24/24 written warranty
24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labor. With OEM axles, warranty failures are rare — but covered if they happen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.
How do I know if my CV axle is failing?
Two tells. Clicking when turning sharply (especially in parking lots) = outer joint failing. Vibration that worsens under acceleration in the 40–60 mph range = inner joint failing. Both at once is possible. If the boot is torn and grease is visible in the wheel well, the joint is contaminated — replace soon.
Can I just replace the CV boot instead of the whole axle?
On Honda, almost never worth it. By the time a boot tears, dirt and water have already gotten into the joint and the grease is gone. Cleaning, regreasing, and rebooting takes nearly as much labor as just replacing the axle — and a fresh axle has a fresh joint. We replace.
Why do you refuse to use parts-store reman axles?
Because we got tired of doing the same job twice. Reman axles often have improperly reground splines, mismatched joint shells, or low-grade replacement grease. Common failures: vibration that won't go away, click that returns in 60 days, or boot weeps from the wrong-size clamp. OEM and premium OEM-spec axles do not have this problem.
Will a bad CV axle damage anything else?
Yes, if ignored. Loose joints can damage the transmission output bearing, throw off wheel bearings from vibration, and eventually fail completely (which strands you). Catch and replace once symptoms appear — don't drive on it for months.
How long should a Honda CV axle last?
Original Honda CV axles routinely make 150,000–200,000 miles. Boot tears (which lead to axle failure) often start showing in the 100k–150k range. SC potholes and rough roads cut life noticeably — we see more axle work here than smoother-road markets.
Do you need to do alignment after a CV axle?
We check toe at minimum, and recommend a full alignment if both axles were done or if the lower control arm was disturbed significantly. CV axle work alone usually doesn't change alignment, but it's worth verifying — alignment is cheap insurance against tire wear.
Will I lose transmission fluid when you pull the axle?
Yes — pulling the inner CV joint out of the transmission spills some ATF. We catch what we can and top off with the correct Honda ATF DW-1 to the proper level. Never generic Dexron — Honda transmissions don't tolerate substitutes.
Can both CV joints fail at once on the same axle?
Yes, especially past 150k miles or if both boots tore. When both joints on the same axle are worn, we replace the whole axle assembly — there's no advantage to a "partial" repair on a unit that's coming apart.
What is SH-AWD and why are those axles different?
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive — Acura's torque-vectoring rear differential system. The rear axles have specific torque ratings and joint geometry to handle the active torque distribution. Aftermarket "fits SH-AWD" axles are notoriously hit-or-miss; we use genuine Honda only on SH-AWD vehicles.
What warranty comes with CV axle replacement?
24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labor, in writing. With OEM Honda or premium OEM-spec axles installed properly, warranty failures are uncommon — but fully covered when they happen.
Clicking on Turns or Vibration Under Throttle?
Free CV axle inspection. We'll tell you which joint is failing and quote a proper OEM repair — not a reman gamble.
