Nalley's Automotive has been the Anderson, SC Acura specialist since 1987, from K24 and J35 service on the 2015-2020 cars to the K20C and 3.0TT Type S platform — including SH-AWD and Brembo brake service.

The Basics

What Does Acura TLX Repair Cover?

TLX repair covers two distinct generations. The 2015-2020 TLX uses either a K24 4-cylinder with 8-speed dual-clutch (DCT) or a 3.5L J35 V6 with 9-speed automatic and SH-AWD. The 2021+ TLX moved to a turbocharged K20C 2.0L (most trims) or 3.0L twin-turbo (Type S) with 10-speed automatic — and added genuine Brembo brakes plus a new SH-AWD with torque vectoring.

We diagnose TLXes with the actual Acura/Honda HDS diagnostic system, follow every TSB and software update relevant to your VIN, and never guess. Every job starts with a photo-documented inspection and a written, line-itemized estimate. Nothing gets opened until you approve.

Know the Warning Signs

Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs TLX Repair

Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.

DCT shudder or harsh shifts (2015-2020 K24)

The 8-speed DCT on 4-cylinder TLXes is unusual for Acura. Multiple TCM TSBs apply — we reflash with the latest software and service the DCT fluid per spec.

9AT hard shifts or hesitation (V6 2015-2020)

Same ZF 9AT issues as the MDX. Acura has issued multiple TCM updates. We reflash and refresh fluid with Acura ATF-DW1.

Cold-start rattle (K24 4-cylinder)

Classic Honda VTC actuator. Acura issued an updated part — we install the current revision.

Approaching 100,000 miles (V6 models)

J35 timing belt + water pump + tensioner is due by 105k on 2015-2020 V6 TLXes. A snapped belt destroys the engine.

Shudder in tight turns (SH-AWD)

Rear differential clutch grab — almost always old DPSF fluid. Acura calls for service every 30k miles on SH-AWD models.

Boost loss or surge (2021+ Type S 3.0TT)

Charge-pipe leaks, wastegate issues, or carbon-fouled direct injectors. We pull live boost data with HDS.

Vibration through the steering wheel

Brembo rotor runout on Type S, or rotor DTV on lower trims. We measure with a dial indicator, not by feel.

Brake squeal (Type S Brembos)

Brembo systems need specific pad compounds. Generic aftermarket pads will squeal and dust badly. We source the correct compound.

AC blows warm

AC compressor clutch failures and condenser leaks. We diagnose before recommending parts.

Check engine light

P0420, misfire codes, and turbo-specific codes on Type S. We scan with HDS and pull live data.

Whine from the rear under load (SH-AWD)

Rear differential fluid or clutch pack issue. We test torque vectoring with HDS.

Fuel smell from oil (K20C Type S)

Direct-injection turbo engines can see some fuel dilution under heavy short-trip use. We measure with every oil change on Type S.

Model-Specific Expertise

Common TLX Repair Issues by Model

Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.

1st Gen (2015-2020)

Two engines: K24V7 2.4L with 8-speed DCT (front-drive) or J35Y6 3.5L V6 with 9-speed ZF automatic and SH-AWD. K24V7 issues: VTC actuator cold-start rattle, DCT software TSBs, motor mount wear. V6: same 9AT TSB story as the MDX, J35 timing belt at 105k, SH-AWD service every 30k. Both engines are robust if maintained.

2nd Gen (2021+)

K20C4 2.0L turbo (most trims) or 3.0L twin-turbo V6 in Type S, both with 10-speed automatic. New SH-AWD with full torque vectoring across the rear axle. Type S adds genuine Brembo front brakes (4-piston). The K20C4 is K20C1 (Type R)-derived — very robust. The 3.0TT is more complex — we follow factory service intervals strictly and use high-quality oil at shortened intervals.

Honest Pricing

What Does TLX Repair Cost?

TLX repair pricing depends entirely on which generation and which engine. A K24 timing chain inspection is one job; a V6 timing belt is another; a Type S 3.0TT carbon clean is something else entirely. We never quote without seeing the car.

We've also seen Acura dealership quotes that bundle work a TLX doesn't actually need. Our written estimate breaks out what's required vs. what's a recommended add-on, so you decide.

Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

Typical Honda / Acura Ranges

Applied toward repair if you proceed with us.

  • Oil change (full synthetic) $85 – $140

Acura DPSF fluid. Required every 30k miles.

  • Brembo front pads + rotors (Type S) $1,100 – $1,650

  • 9AT or DCT software update + fluid $320 – $520

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.

My 2015-2020 TLX V6 is approaching 100,000 miles. What's due?

The J35 V6 timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idler, and drive belts — all replaced together — by 105,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. Acura factory recommendation. A snapped J-series timing belt destroys the engine ($5,000+ to replace).

My K24 TLX has an 8-speed DCT and it shifts roughly. Is it dying?

Probably not. The 8-speed DCT on 2015-2020 4-cylinder TLXes has had multiple Acura TCM software updates. We reflash with the latest calibration and service the DCT fluid per spec. Most rough-shift complaints resolve.

How often does the SH-AWD system need service?

Rear differential fluid every 30,000 miles with Acura DPSF on V6 (2015-2020) and 2021+ Type S models. No substitutes. Skip it and the clutch packs grab — you'll feel shudder in tight turns and lose the torque vectoring SH-AWD is designed for.

Do you work on the TLX Type S?

Yes — the 3.0L twin-turbo, 10AT, new SH-AWD, and Brembo brake system. We follow Acura's factory service intervals strictly (high-quality oil, shorter intervals on the 3.0TT), and we use proper Brembo-spec pads — not generic ceramics that squeal and dust.

My Type S Brembo brakes squeal. Why?

Almost always one of three things: someone installed cheap aftermarket pads (very common), the slides weren't cleaned and re-lubed at the last service, or bedding-in was skipped. We use Brembo-spec pads, replace hardware, and run the proper 30-stop bed-in.

My K20C Type S TLX has a fuel smell in the oil. Is that bad?

A small amount of fuel dilution is normal on direct-injection turbo engines, especially with short-trip driving. If it's heavy, we measure with every oil change and consider shorter intervals. Highway driving and proper warm-up help significantly.

Will using Nalley's void my Acura warranty?

No. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) prevents Acura from voiding warranty for using an independent shop. We use OEM parts and document everything.

How much cheaper are you than the Acura dealership?

Typically 20-35% less than dealer pricing for the same OEM parts and the same labor scope. We don't carry dealer overhead, but we run the same Acura HDS diagnostic system.

How long should a TLX last?

200k+ miles is realistic for both generations with proper maintenance. K24V7 4-cylinder cars are simpler and tend to be the longest-lived. V6 cars need the timing belt and SH-AWD service done on schedule. Type S 3.0TT is too new to call definitively but tracking well.

My TLX has the check engine light on. Is it urgent?

Get it scanned within a week. Some codes (evap, O2 sensor) aren't urgent. Others (misfires, lean codes, knock on Type S) will damage the catalytic converter or engine. A $130 scan tells you which camp you're in.

TLX Acting Up? Let's Diagnose It Right.

Don't guess what your TLX needs. Book an Acura HDS diagnostic — we'll tell you what's actually wrong, in writing, with photos.
