Acura RDX Repair in Anderson, SC
The Acura RDX is unique — three completely different engines across three generations, each with their own service patterns. Nalley's Automotive has been the Anderson, SC Acura specialist since 1987, from the original K23 turbo (the only Honda turbo of its era) through the J35 V6 years and the current K20C4 2.0T with 10-speed automatic.
What Does Acura RDX Repair Cover?
RDX repair covers three distinct platforms. The 1st-gen (2007-2012) used a unique K23 2.3L turbo — completely different from anything else Honda was making. The 2nd-gen (2013-2018) moved to the J35 3.5L V6 with 6AT. The 3rd-gen (2019+) is K20C4 2.0L turbo with 10AT — sharing DNA with the Civic Type R but tuned for refinement.
We diagnose RDXes with the actual Acura/Honda HDS diagnostic system, follow every TSB and software update specific to your VIN, and never apply one platform's fixes to another. Every job starts with a photo-documented inspection and a written estimate. Nothing happens until you approve.
Signs Your Honda or Acura Needs RDX Repair
Catching these symptoms early almost always means a cheaper repair. If any of these sound familiar, give us a call.
Turbo whistle or boost loss (1st gen K23)
K23 turbo issues are often charge-pipe leaks, wastegate wear, or coupler degradation. We pull live boost data with HDS, not just codes.
Fuel smell from oil (3rd gen 2.0T)
K20C4 direct-injection can see fuel dilution under heavy short-trip use. We measure with every oil change on 2019+ RDXes.
Approaching 100,000 miles (V6 2013-2018)
J35 V6 timing belt + water pump + tensioner is due by 105k. A snapped belt destroys the engine.
Hard shifts or hesitation (10AT 2019+)
Acura has issued TCM software updates for the 10-speed automatic. We reflash with the latest calibration.
Shudder in tight turns (SH-AWD)
Rear differential clutch grab — almost always old DPSF fluid. Acura calls for service every 30k on SH-AWD models.
Burning oil between changes (V6 2013-2018)
VCM-related ring wear (V6 RDXes use VCM). We diagnose rings vs. valve seals vs. PCV.
AWD warning light
Wheel speed sensor, VSA, or rear differential. We read with HDS, not guesswork.
Vibration at idle
Motor mount wear (especially front mount on V6 and 2.0T) or VCM running rough on V6. Diagnosis matters.
AC blows warm
AC compressor clutch failures and condenser leaks are common across all three generations.
Pulsation through the brake pedal
Rotor runout or DTV. We measure with a dial indicator and address the underlying cause.
Check engine light
P0420, misfire codes (especially VCM-cylinders on V6), turbo-specific codes on K23 and K20C4. We scan with HDS and pull live data.
Cold-start rattle (V6)
VTC actuator wear on J35 V6 RDXes. Acura has an updated part — we install the current revision.

OEM-grade parts
Genuine Acura/Honda parts where it matters — timing kits, DPSF fluid, turbo couplers, sensors. No bargain parts on a complex AWD luxury crossover.
Repair by an Acura specialist
Our techs know all three RDX platforms. They don't apply K23 fixes to J35 issues or vice versa — every generation is treated as the distinct engine it is.
Road test + final scan
Every RDX repair gets a road test to verify the fix. We re-scan and verify SH-AWD and transmission adaptive learn.
Warranty in writing
24 months / 24,000 miles on parts and labor. In writing. No fine print.
Common RDX Repair Issues by Model
Honda and Acura platforms each have their own quirks. Here's what we see most often on the cars we work on every day.
1st Gen (2007-2012)
K23A1 2.3L turbo — the only turbo Honda sold in North America at the time. Common issues: turbo charge-pipe leaks, wastegate wear, ignition coil failures, motor mount collapse, AC compressor failures, and SH-AWD service neglect (rear diff). Parts are getting harder to find — we source through Acura's long-tail catalog. Quirky but rewarding to keep running.
2nd Gen (2013-2018)
J35Y1 V6 with 6AT, optional SH-AWD. Common issues: VCM-related oil consumption (we install VCM Muzzlers), timing belt at 105k (critical), cold-start VTC rattle, motor mounts, rear diff fluid every 30k on SH-AWD models. Strong platform if the VCM is managed.
3rd Gen (2019+)
K20C4 2.0L turbo with 10-speed automatic, SH-AWD. K20C4 is K20C1 (Civic Type R)-derived but tuned for refinement — very robust. Issues: 10AT TCM software TSBs, some fuel dilution under heavy short-trip use, SH-AWD service every 30k, motor mounts wearing earlier than expected on some VINs. A-Spec and Advance trims behave the same mechanically.
What Does RDX Repair Cost?
RDX repair pricing depends entirely on which generation you have. A K23 turbo coupler replacement is one job; a J35 timing belt is another; a 2.0T 10AT software update plus fluid service is something else. We never quote without seeing the car.
We've also seen Acura dealership quotes that bundle work an RDX doesn't actually need. Our written estimate breaks out what's required vs. what's a recommended add-on, so you decide.
Final pricing always comes after we inspect your vehicle. We'll send a written, line-itemized estimate before any work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Real answers to the questions Honda and Acura owners ask us most.
I have a 2007-2012 RDX with the K23 turbo. Can you still get parts?
Yes — most parts are still available through Acura's long-tail catalog. Some turbo-specific parts (couplers, the turbo itself) we source from quality aftermarket suppliers who make OEM-equivalent components. We'll tell you honestly if a part is hard to find before we start the job.
My 2013-2018 V6 RDX is approaching 100,000 miles. What's due?
The J35 V6 timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idler, and drive belts — all replaced together — by 105,000 miles or 7 years. An Acura factory recommendation. A snapped J-series timing belt destroys the engine ($5,000+ to replace).
My V6 RDX burns oil. Is it the VCM issue?
Probably. 2013-2018 V6 RDXes use VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) — the same system as the Pilot and MDX. The deactivated cylinders run cool, oil migrates past the rings, and you get consumption. We can install a VCM Muzzler to keep all 6 cylinders active, plus diagnose any ring or seal wear that's already happened.
My 2019+ RDX 10-speed shifts hard. What's wrong?
Acura has issued TCM software updates for the 10AT on 2019+ RDXes. We can reflash with the latest calibration and refresh the fluid with Acura ATF-DW1. The combination resolves most shift-quality complaints.
How often does the SH-AWD system need service?
Rear differential fluid every 30,000 miles with Acura DPSF. No substitutes. Skip it and the clutch packs in the rear diff grab — you'll feel shudder in tight turns and lose torque vectoring.
My 2019+ RDX 2.0T has a fuel smell in the oil. Is that bad?
A small amount is normal on direct-injection turbo engines under heavy short-trip use. We measure dilution with every oil change and consider shorter intervals if it's significant. Highway driving and proper warm-up help.
Will using Nalley's void my Acura warranty?
No. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) prevents Acura from voiding warranty for using an independent shop. We use OEM parts and document everything.
How much cheaper are you than the Acura dealership?
Typically 20-35% less than dealer pricing for the same OEM parts and the same labor scope. We don't carry dealer overhead, but we run the same Acura HDS diagnostic system.
How long should an RDX last?
200k+ miles is realistic across all three generations with proper maintenance. K23 turbos need attention to charge-pipe seals and ignition coils. V6 models need timing belt and VCM management. 2.0T models need consistent oil quality and 10AT fluid service. All three can go the distance.
My RDX has a check engine light. Is it urgent?
Get it scanned within a week. P0420 (catalyst) isn't urgent. Misfires (P0301-P0306) and turbo-related codes (P0299 underboost) need attention quickly. A $130 scan tells you which camp you're in.
RDX Trouble? Let's Diagnose It Right.
Three different engines, three different service patterns. Book an Acura HDS diagnostic — we'll tell you what's actually wrong with your specific RDX, in writing, with photos.
